Goshun was the founder of the Shijō branch of a Japanese school of painting today called Maruyama-Shijō. The word Shijō refers to Fourth Avenue in the city of Kyōto where Goshun had his workshop. Maruyama is the last name of school’s other founder (i.e., Ōkyo Maruyama). Goshun combined self-expression with Ōkyo’s realism to create the Shijō style. Ten examples of Goshun’s flower-bird art are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. These pictures were included in 19th century, woodblock-printed picture books published to provide Japanese art lovers with examples of paintings by famous artists.
